What is CTA (Call to Action)?

In short

A CTA (call to action) is the button, link or line of copy that asks a visitor to do one specific thing, such as "Add to cart". A good CTA says exactly what happens next and is visible without hunting for it, especially on a phone.

What makes a call to action work

A strong CTA has three parts: the verb, the outcome and the context around it. "Add to cart" works because the action is obvious. "See delivery times" works because the visitor knows what they get. Vague labels such as "Submit" or "Click here" leave people guessing.

Placement matters as much as wording. On a product page the primary button should sit next to the price and the stock status, visible on a phone without scrolling. On long pages the button repeats, but the message stays the same so two different actions never compete.

Give each page one primary action. Secondary actions — newsletter sign-up, size guide, downloadable spec sheet — should be styled more quietly so they support the main action instead of stealing attention from it.

Why it matters for an online store in the EU

European shoppers compare before they buy and expect the essentials near the button: shipping cost, delivery time, return window and the payment methods you accept. A call to action shown without those answers gets hesitation rather than clicks.

A practical example: a furniture store keeps "Add to cart" unchanged but adds one line about delivery lead time and returns right beneath it. The button did not change — the context did, and that is usually what moves the decision. Consent banners also matter: if a banner covers the button on mobile, the best copy in the world cannot help.

Common mistakes

  • Several buttons with equal visual weight, so the visitor picks none.
  • Generic labels such as "Submit", "Click here" or "Learn more".
  • The primary button sits below the fold on mobile.
  • Asking for a big commitment before answering shipping and returns questions.
  • Changing button wording from page to page without a reason or a measurement.

Frequently asked questions about CTAs

What button text converts best?

The one that names the action and its outcome in the customer's own words. For stores, the conventional "Add to cart" usually wins because shoppers expect it. Test wording on secondary buttons, where the downside is small, and keep whichever variant produces measurably more orders.

How many CTAs should a page have?

One primary action, repeated as often as a long page needs, plus at most one quiet secondary action. When a visitor has to choose between three equally prominent options, the common outcome is that they choose none and leave the page entirely.

Does button colour matter?

Contrast against the rest of the page and tap size on mobile matter far more than the specific colour. A visible button, large enough for a thumb, with readable text works in almost any theme. Check colour contrast for accessibility before changing your palette.
